Performing Arts Week

Next week is Performing Arts Week. I’m pumped. It was fun brainstorming ideas of what we can do as a class and we came up wiht some funny ideas. I think it’s good to be able to not focus on the exams and studying and everything and just for a minute to focus on somehting fun and creative. It’s also good to be able to do some performing, even if it’s just silly, funny stuff, because it’ll give us a break from theory and a break from the pressure that we have from all our other subjects and 3/4 SACs and everything. I also had never heard of instant/invisible theatre before this week, so it should eb fun to experiment with a new kind of theatre.
Looking forward to it!

Its taken me a while but I’m figuring this out..

Just want to clarify, I think I’ve been putting posts in comments and that’s why they dont appear on the main amy blog site. I found a couple of the analyses I had written under comments from that first post that vineblogs give you called ‘Hello World!’. So basically I’m an idiot and I commented myself. I don’t know if there’s any point in tryign to move them to posts because they won’t be in the right date or anything, but knowing me I probably wouldn’t be able to do that anyway. Also I realised that the reason why my past actual posts havent appered either is because I have been clicking ’save’ and assuming it will appear but not clicking ‘publish’. I’m not very computer savvy if you haven’t noticed.
Now more ‘posts’ should be coming so get ready, vineblogs!

How our play is progressing

Okey doke - now that I have Vineblogs figured out I can get started. The main thing that we’re focusing on at the moment in theatre are our plays based on the Greek theatre structure. I think considering that it’s one of our first plays that we’ve done in class with such a specific structure we’ve done pretty well but it would have been good had we been a little bit more prepared. Hopefully all will turn out good for the performance tomorrow.

My role in our production - I feel that I am being one of the leaders in the group and I cant tell whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Sometimes I feel that if someone doesnt take control a little bit we wont really get anywhere in our play, but then sometimes I find myself beign too controlling and I am unsure if it is that I am not letting others have a go or that they dont want to have a go. Occasionally if we have a session we will just sit there while everyone does there own thing, and by doing that we dont get anywhere. There are defiantely others in our group who are inputting heaps as well and thats always good. I hope that if anyone feels that those who are kind of directing the play are being annoying they’ll tell us. I am possibly being paranoid though.

How our play was made - I think if we would have sat down and concentrated on working out exactly what the plot of our play would be it would benefit us a lot because we would not push ourselves into a corner in terms of not knowing what to do next. We found ourselves in that situation a little bit in the making of our play but not to such a high extent. We focused a lot on creating the prologue at the beginning of the play which is to the song ‘Do you believe in magic’ and spent quite a bit of our working time on that. A lot of the play isnt scripted and we rely on our knowledge and recollection to make the plot clear, so I just home we can remember all of our blocking and queues that we originally made.

I hope that ….
-we can always keep in mind the structure of Greek theatre, particularly never to get carried away in modern theatre and always to remember to be over-dramatic with all our actions.
-we can constantly be aware of the next scene or the next sequence of actions that the chorus have to do together - basically everything that we have rehearsed.

I can see the play turning out well though. Even though it may be an unfamiliar genre of theatre that we’re entering, as we go further into our production process I think we’ll pick up more things that distinguish the Greek theatre style and it’ll be a great performance!
And in case any of those Dreamgods are reading this, to clarify, I do not want to be a Dreamgod and the fact that our original song ‘Dreamgods’ appears in our play is completely coincidental.

Commedia D’el Arte plays.. My group’s play

Now. I enjoyed this task for the most part of it. I must admit I found it a bit tricky - it was really stepping out of my comfort zone. At times I found it difficult to really grasp the Zanni’s character and not just base it on some modern figure that i can relate to myself. I think (hope) that I did catch on at some point to the Commedia D’el Arte style and technique, as unfamiliar as it may have been.
The way we worked as a group definately could have been better. I found that during the process of putting the play together the whole group wasn’t genuinly interested in preparing the play - blocking it and working our queues etc. It would have been better had every member of the group put in equally because it was a group piece and no individual can do it by themself. Everyone did put in, but some people only incorporated ideas when they felt like it. I think if we had all sorted out the basics at our first rehearsals then we wouldn’t have been so stressed and unorganised at the end. We probably procrastinated a bit. If all members of the group had been really enthusiastic about the play and about doign it really well then I think it would have had the potential to be a really good performance. Which maybe it was I really have no idea how it was from an audience member’s perspective. Anyway I definately think that there are some aspects of our production process which could have been better but hopefully we’ll know for next time. When it came down to just ebfore the performance we felt a lot of pressure which could have effected our performance, but i guess it’s just a learning process and we needed to experience this in order to know that its not the right way to go. However, I think all in all we pulled it off, did a good job and had fun! Always important! :)
